Big motorcycle road trip, camping most nights, mostly solo. #advmonster indeed. Fun will be had. Much exhaustion there will be. BUT I NEED YOUR HELP!
Hopefully the link works but basically: Portland>Coeur d’Alene>Spire Rock campground>Bear Gulch campground>Minnesota>Sage Creek campground>South Rim campground>Grand Canyon...???>???
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The two main goals here are go home to catch up with family and friends, and visit the Grand Canyon. Does anyone have recommendations on campgrounds at the Grand Canyon? Maybe a spot on the rim where I can catch a sunrise?
Furthermore, any recommendations on where I should go the next couple of nights? There are a ton of amazing national parks and recreation areas out here. But I have a ‘murica da bootiful pass that I bought just for this trip. Zion? Red Rocks? Tahoe? Joshua Tree? Something better? Looking to do 400-500 miles per day. Less is fine but really don’t want to do more. I’m also open to modifying what I’ve already laid out.
Also, these road choices are even less set in stone than each day’s destination, this is all just a general idea. I don’t need or want a totally concrete, minute by minute schedule. It’s about the journey, not about making good time. I’m using all of my paid time off for this year on this trip, and planning it around a holiday and a comp day for even more time, so there’s no rush here.
This journey starts in just over two weeks. Not sure how much I’ll be on here during that time, but I will be updating my Instagram for sure @this_account_is_mt and using #advmonster for most of those posts.

I would recommend Red Rocks or Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak - Mt. Evans if you can’t get to the Springs.

How do you feel about well graded dirt roads?
Going down to Hamilton MT on HWY 93 then over Skalkaho pass to Phillipsburg>Anadonda>Butte>bozeman would be much more interesting on a bike than pounding away on I90 at 80 mph all day long.

Your map is going to the south rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado, not the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

I’m good with it! That’s what my tires are for anyways! But for that stretch my parents will be with on their Harleys, so I’ll have to see how they feel about it.

It’s excellent! For me anyways, probably not for a lot of others, but I love it. I don’t feel best up or super exhausted at the end of a long ride. It’s comfortable, stable, and fun. Averages about 50mpg highway, so no complaints there.
No screen, and no plans of getting one. Thought about it but can’t find one I like and frankly I don’t think it would help that much because they’re all small and there aren’t any other fairings to help anyways. Plus, I come from Harleys, doesn’t take much to be better than those!

You could do it with a harley, just depends on how adventuresome they are, the road is a state highway so it is well maintained and not steep. That area is also very very remote so you have to top off the tank before leaving Hamilton and heading over the pass. I think it’s close to 80 miles to Phillipsburg, which is worth the stop.

If you haven’t booked a campsite inside Grand Canyon NP, your chances of landing one now are almost nil.
I’d really recommend taking the Million Dollar Highway (550) which you can catch in Montrose. The segment from Silverton to Durango is incredible and would make for a great ride. From Durango, you could run to the cool but underwhelming Four Corners, then cut out to Grand Canyon via highway 160 and swing by Monument valley. Sorta like this route.
Give a shout if you’re cruising through Denver!

Oh absolutely and I would if I were in one. My dad at least is extremely particular about his bike so it’s probably not going to happen.

Good point, but I’m not opposed to setting up camp in the middle of nowhere on my own. Don’t really need a campsite, just enough luck to not get caught in an area where open/free camping isn’t allowed.
I will definitely check out that route later, thanks!
It’s a possibility for sure, so if I do I’ll let you know!

Vegas will add some variety to the trip, after what I assume to be mostly camping. Cruise down the strip, and then get a nice hotel room for a night.

I guess the question is: Do you need to go to C, E and D? If so then you probably have a decent graps on the route, if not you are bypassing all the cools

Awesome. I’m leaving for this on Saturday morning
https://goo.gl/maps/LfW7isqyaEv
Note: I used the “avoid highways” filter. I also put some time into it to make sure it was interesting. StreetView is your friend.
You should try checking out the avoid highways every day and see how much time it adds on. Barreling across South Dakota on I-90 twice will bore you to death. If it only adds an hour to your day, it might be worth it. If it adds like, SIX hours to your day, stick to the highways, then check it out at every gas stop.
This is how we crossed SD east>west. We had to run some highway to cover the state, but at some point, we pulled off.
Believe me, this is better than dealing with people in a hurry and tractor trailers. (these photos are from that route)
Out west in the flatty states, you can often find a parallel road a few miles off the highway that has a speed limit of 55. Cruise at 64 all day long, stopping occasionally for a stop sign, or slowing down to 45 for about a mile for some little, tiny town.
Have fun!

Ok, so you’re riding through the Western US, early in the summer. There are NO wrong answers on where to go, I think.
I haven’t seen enough of it, but a few thoughts on places I have been to:
- Rocky Mountain National Park is stunning
- Carhenge outside Alliance, NE is kinda cool in a kitschy way, but I wouldn’t go far out of your way for it.
- Chimney Rock near Scottsbluff is cool, again don’t go way out of your way for it
- Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods are great, near Colorado Springs
- Joshua Tree is cool - but hot
- Presume you’ve been to Crater Lake and Yosemite? Latter is my favorite place anywhere — and there is a LOT of park besides the valley where everyone else is.
- Jackson Hole/Grand Tetons/Yellowstone is amazing, but probably too far out of your way (?)

The main goal and reason for this trip is visiting family and friends around location D. C and E are just easy stopovers along the way, but by no means are actually goals themselves. And the whole route is more of a guideline than something I must follow.

Yours looks fun too!
Definitely planning on avoiding highways as much as possible. This map was slapped together in minutes and is really only a guideline, or maybe just a general idea of stops, and even stops aren’t set in stone. Believe me I have no interest in cruising interstates at 80+ all day long. That’s exhausting. I want scenery!

I’ve done Crater, it’s only a few hours from me. But I definitely want to do the Wyoming stuff. Could definitely add it out already my route. This is really only a rough guideline and idea of possible stops anyways.

Thats what I was wondering. I can’t advice on all the route but I HIGHLY recommend you consider this route through utah.

Depending on how much off roading you want too there are some GREAT shortcuts in there you wouldn’t want to miss, like hells backbone and the cockscomb

Maybe I’ll come back through Utah rather than California. I really want to hit some spots in Arizona and new Mexico. Maybe as far down as Phoenix, I have friends there.
But I know the real reason you want me to come through Utah is so we can go mountain biking!

not unless I can get in shape first, my first ride of the season revealed many operator deficiencies.
Im not even kidding though that if you skip highway 12 you will be doing yourself a disservice.

There is so much to see and do, it’s overwhelming, really. Every idea anyone has submitted here is a good one - - but you can’t do them all.
Some of these destinations are worthy of 3-7 days on their own (easily 5-7 for Yosemite if you had the time). You’ll need to figure out if you want to spend a day or so in a place that could keep you happy for a week, or if you find that frustrating. If it were me, I would strictly limit the number of big National Parks in order to experience just a couple of them more fully - but that’s me, not you— you’re gonna have a great time, regardless!

My family is in SD right now. We drove up from TX, and made Custer SP in SD our destination. We have hit Mt. Rushmore and Devils Tower in Wyoming, both important spots worth a stop. We’re doing the Badlands tomorrow. While some say this part of the country is boring, I find it absolutely breathtaking. Have a safe trip.

I like it there too. I’ve driven through the area more than a few times, going back and forth between Laramie and Minnesota. Little town called keystone is pretty neat, and scenic highway 16a.
